Business applications of GIS in sustainable integrated pest management, landscaping and forest management

This presentation showcases GIS use-cases in the County's Office of Sustainability (OOS) concerning integrated pest management (IPM) and urban forestry management projects. Details will include the need and the expected outcomes from a programmatic level.

For these projects, OOS is working with Plan-IT Geo to configure their existing online GIS database product to better serve the needs of the Office. Plan-IT Geo staff will give a demonstration to highlight the features of the product, the vision, and the progress to this point in configuring it for specific project use.

For IPM projects, the configured GIS database should streamline processing pesticide use requests, analysis of pest inspection data, pest treatment recordkeeping, and improve the ability of County staff to make informed decisions on pest management.

For urban forestry, Plan-IT Geo’s TreePlotter product allows for searching, filtering, and analysis of the County’s facilities and parks tree inventory. In addition, the County is also able to import community environmental and demographic data to help prioritize tree planting and plan future canopy growth.

Naresh Duggal leads the County of Santa Clara's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) & Pesticide Use Reduction Program. He provides programmatic approach on nature-based solutions to the County’s sustainability and climate change impacts mitigation and adaptation endeavors. Examples include forest resilience and health, wildfire hazard mitigation, waste reuse (woody biomass, biosolids, compost), drought resilience, water conservation and management, soil health, sustainable agriculture and landscaping, and green infrastructure.

Chris Curry has worked for more than five years as an analyst in the County of Santa Clara’s Office of Sustainability managing natural resource projects in areas such as integrated pest management, sustainable landscaping, water conservation and urban forestry. Since joining the County, Chris has been interested in GIS data collection and analysis to improve project deliverables and results.
